St. John
Baptist Church was organized in the year 1928 by the Reverend Zachariah Glimps
and a group of dedicated Christians under the divine guidance of the Holy Ghost.
The church was then located in Martee City. The first edifice of worship
was erected under the pastorage of the Reverend George Goodman. Following
Reverend Goodman, the church was lead by Rev F. P. Peterkin, Rev Williams, Rev
McRobins, Rev Jackson, Rev Dunn, Rev Hall, and Rev Spaulding, respectively.
In 1937,
Reverend W. R. Singleton answered the call to shepherd the flock at St. John.
In his 30 years as pastor, the church flourished and grew tremendously. Under
Rev Singleton's administration a new sanctuary was built. However, this edifice
was destroyed by fire soon after the church had moved in.
Reverend
H. L. Bradley was called to lead St. John. Under his leadership, the
church moved to its current site at 2251 NW 2nd Street in Ocala, Florida. The
New St. John Baptist Church was erected and dedicated in 1969.
The
youngest pastor ever to be called to and accept the call to New St John Baptist
Church was the Reverend Mack King Carter. He had a personal dedication and
devotion to the Lord's work. Under his guidance, the church worship
services moved from two Sundays a month to a station church and additional
property was purchased.
On the
first Sunday in April 1975, Reverend Tommy L. Brooks began his pastorage at
New St. John Baptist Church. His motto is "A church in a community of
churches where a neighborhood becomes a brotherhood." He continues to lead the
church through his knowledgeable biblical teachings and passionate preaching of
the gospel. We have no doubt of the future of this wonderful institution, as we
know Jesus Christ is still Lord.
